Banff Upper Hot Springs

Project Overview

In 2005 the Banff Upper Hot Springs needed additional natural heating for its pool as well as domestic hot water and space heating for the structure. The unique thermal system was awarded Building of the Year Award for a Special Purpose Facility under 100,000 sq ft by Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA)

Solutions

The natural geothermal hot springs fluctuate in flow volume and temperature throughout the year, causing high operating costs and sometimes pool closures. This project combined the benefits of the existing natural geothermal energy with heat pump technologies. This was a creative way to maximize the use of the natural spring water, all while decreasing the operating costs of the pool. It also served to reduce onsite greenhouse gas emissions from the facility. The system was also designed to recover the heat energy that had previously been dissipated during the pool spring water turnover. The energy is returned to the pool, thereby reducing the amount of additional heat required.

In addition to providing heat for the pool, it can also provide the space heating and cooling for the building, as well as its domestic hot water needs.
